Building a love for language that lasts

At Bucket House, we believe that the most meaningful beginning to learning Mandarin is not memorising more words, it is wanting to learn more.

In the early years, language learning is also the beginning of curiosity, confidence and learning habits.

When a child enjoys listening to a story, finds delight in a new expression, confidently shares an idea in Mandarin, or becomes curious about the meaning behind a Chinese character, something far more important than vocabulary is taking root: a genuine relationship with the language and the desire to keep learning.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, Mandarin at Bucket House is not treated as an isolated subject. It lives naturally within children’s everyday experiences, through stories and conversations, inquiry and projects, music and movement, art and culture, relationships and the many questions children bring into the classroom.

We do not believe that meaningful learning needs to feel pressured in order to produce results. Our educators intentionally build strong foundations in listening, speaking, vocabulary, language awareness and early literacy, while giving children the time and space to understand, connect, express and use Mandarin with confidence.

Our approach is deliberately long-term. Rather than pursuing short-lived performance, we nurture the interest, habits and confidence that allow learning to deepen year after year.

Because one day, children will leave preschool. What we hope stays with them is not simply what they have learned in Mandarin, but the confidence to use it, the curiosity to explore it, and the habit of continuing to learn.

That is the foundation we believe lasts a lifetime.
