Exploring the World Through Chinese Culture
What can a clay figure tell us about the past? How does a brush change the way a character looks? What do we notice when we pause to smell and taste tea?
At Bucket House, children explore Chinese culture through experiences such as terracotta art, calligraphy, tea appreciation, seal carving and embroidery. Each offers something different to notice, try and talk about. Children hear new words in context and use Mandarin to ask questions and share what they discover.
In our oracle bone script project, for example, children looked closely at ancient characters and wondered whether their shapes held clues to their meanings. They shared their guesses and looked for clues with their teachers and friends. A question about a shape became a way to explore how people recorded ideas long ago.
Come see how children get to know Chinese culture through the things they make, the questions they ask and the discoveries they share.
